27 SHLOKAS FOR HINDU CHILDREN

AS A LIFE-LONG SPIRITUAL ARMOUR

॥ ओं ॥

॥ श्री-गुरुभ्यो नमः। हरिः ओं॥

1. अगजानन-पद्मार्कं गजाननमहर्निशं।

अनेकदं तं भक्तानां एकदन्तमुपास्महे ||

agajAnana padmArkaM gajAnanam-aharnisham /

anekadaM taM bhaktAnAM ekadantamupAsmahe //

அகஜானன-பத்மார்க்கம் கஜானனமஹர்நிஶம்

அநேகதம் தம் பக்தானாம் ஏகதந்தம் உபாஸ்மஹே 

I worship the single-tusked Lord (Vinayaka), who grants to his devotees things innumerable, and who with his elephant-face, shines day and night by the effervescence from the lotus face of the Goddess, the daughter of the Himalaya.

 

2. उमाकोमलहस्ताब्ज-सम्भावित-ललाटकम्।

हिरण्यकुण्डलं वन्दे कुमारं पुष्करस्रजम्॥

umAkomala-hastAbja-sambhAvita-lalATakaM/

hiraNyakuNDalaM vande kumAraM pushhkara-srajam //

உமாகோமள-ஹஸ்தாப்ஜ-ஸம்பாவித-லலாடகம்

ஹிரண்யகுண்டலம் வந்தே குமாரம் புஷ்கரஸ்ரஜம் 

I salute the Kumara (youth) Karthikeya, with golden dangling ear ring and with lotus garland, whose forehead is fondled by the tender lotus-like hand of Mother Parvati. 

3. गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।

गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥

gururbrahmA gururvishhNuH gururdevo maheshvaraH /

guruH sAkshhAt paraM brahma tasmai shrI gurave namaH //

குருர்பிரும்மா குருர்விஷ்ணு: குருர்தேவோ மஹேஶ்வர:

குருஸ்ஸாக்ஷாத் பரம் பிரம்ம தஸ்மை ஶ்ரீ குரவே நம:

 

 

Guru is Brahma; Guru is Vishnu; Guru is God Shiva; Guru is the Absolute Reaity, called Brahman. To that Guru I prostrate. 

 

4. गुरवे सर्वलोकानां भिषजे भव-रोगिणाम्।

निधये सर्व-विद्यानां दक्षिणामूर्तये नमः॥

gurave sarvalokAnAM bhishaje bhavarogiNAm /

nidhaye sarvavidyAnAM dakshhiNAmUrtaye namaH //

குரவே ஸர்வலோகானாம் பிஷஜே பவரோகிணாம்

நிதயே ஸர்வவித்யானாம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்த்தயே நம:

 

Prostrations to Dakshinamurti who is the Guru for all the universe; He is the healer for the universal disease of transmigration; He is the repository of all Knowledge.

 

5. कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मीः करमध्ये सरस्वती।

करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते कर-दर्शनम्॥

karAgre vasate lakshmIH karamadhye saraswatI /

karamUle tu govindaH prabhAte kara-darshanam //

கராக்ரே வஸதே லக்ஷ்மீ: கரமத்யே ஸரஸ்வதீ

கரமூலே து கோவிந்த: ப்ரபாதே கரதர்ஶனம்

 

Lakshmi resides at the tip of the palm; Sarasvati in the mid region and Govinda at the root.  (Hence) Have a respectful look at the palm every dawn.

 

6 सर्व-मङ्गल-माङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ-साधिके।

शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोस्तु ते॥

sarvamangala-mAngalye shive sarvArtha-sAdhike /

sharaNye triyambike gaurI nArAyaNi namostu te // 

ஸர்வமங்களமாங்கல்யே ஶிவே ஸர்வார்த்தஸாதிகே

ஶரண்யே த்ரியம்பிகே கௌரி நாராயணி நமோஸ்து தே

 

Prostrations to Gauri, to Shivaa (the left half of Shiva),the sister of Narayana, the partner of the three-eyed,  and who is the one fit to surrender, who bestows all that is auspicious and all that we want.

7. नमस्तेऽस्तु महामाये श्रीपीठे सुरपूजिते।

शङ्ख-चक्र-गदा-हस्ते महालक्ष्मी नमोस्तु ते॥

namaste.astu mahAmAye shrIpIThe surapUjite /

sha~Nkha-cakra-gadA-haste mahAlakshhmI namo.astu te //

நமஸ்தேஸ்து மஹாமாயே ஶ்ரீபீடே ஸுரபூஜிதே

ஶங்கசக்ர-கதாஹஸ்தே மஹாலக்ஷ்மீ நமோஸ்து தே

 

Prostrations to Mahalakshmi, the Goddess of great MAyA, who resides on an excellent auspicious pedestal, who is worshipped by all the divines, and who holds the conch, the disc and the mace in her hands.

8. शुभां हिरण्य-प्राकारां समुद्र-तनयां जयाम्।
नमामि मङ्गळां देवीं विष्णु-वक्ष-स्थल-स्थिताम्॥

shubhAM hiraNya-prAkArAM samudra-tanayAM jayAm .

namAmi maNgaLAM devIM vishhNu-vakshha-sthala-sthitAm ..

ஶுபாம்ஹிரண்யப்ராகாராம்ஸமுத்ரதநயாம்ஜயாம்

நமாமி மங்களாம் தேவீம் விஷ்ணுவக்ஷஸ்தலஸ்திதாம்

I prostrate before the auspicious Goddess, seated in the chest portion of Lord Vishnu. She is divine, she is circled by golden walls, she is the celestial daughter of the Ocean-God (in the sense she originated when the Milk Ocean was churned) and she is ever-victorious.

9. सरस्वती नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणी।

विद्यारम्भं करिष्यामि सिद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा॥८॥

sarasvatI namastubhyaM varade kAmarUpiNI /

vidyArambhaM karishhyAmi siddhirbhavatu me sadA //

ஸரஸ்வதீ நமஸ்துப்யம் வரதே காமரூபிணீ

வித்யாரம்பம் கரிஷ்யாமி ஸித்திர்பவது மே ஸதா

 

Oh Goddess Saraswati, Prostrations to you, Benefactor of all boons, and fulfiller of all desires -- I begin my studies, with prayers to you for success  in this endeavour.

10. या देवी सर्व-भूतेषु मातृरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

yA devI sarva-bhUteshhu mAtRRirUpeNa saMsthitA .

namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaH

யா தேவீ ஸர்வபூதேஷு மாத்ருரூபேண ஸம்ஸ்திதா
நமஸ்தஸ்யை நமஸ்தஸ்யை நமஸ்தஸ்யை நமோ நமஹ

To the Goddess who abides in the form of Mother in all beings, to Her My Salutations, to Her my Prostrations, again and again and  again.

 

 

11. रुद्रं पशुपतिं स्थाणुं नीलकण्ठं उमापतिम्।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्युः करिष्यति॥

rudraM pashupatiM sthANuM nIlakaNThaM umApatim .

namAmi shirasA devaM kiM no mRRityuH karishhyati ..

ருத்ரம் பஶுபதிம் ஸ்தாணும் நீலகண்டம் உமாபதிம்
நமாமி ஶிரஸா தேவம் கிம் நோ ம்ருத்யுஹ் கரிஷ்யதி

 

I bow my head in obeisance to Rudra, the master of all souls, the changeless, the eternal, the blue-necked consort of Uma. What can death do to us? 

12. वागर्थाविव संपृक्तौ वागर्थ-प्रतिपत्तये।

जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वती-परमेश्वरौ॥

vAgarthAviva sampRRiktau vAgartha-pratipattaye /

jagataH pitarau vande pArvatI-parameshvarau //

வாகர்த்தாவிவ ஸம்ப்ருக்தௌ வாகர்த்த ப்ரதிபத்தயே

ஜகத: பிதரௌ வந்தே பார்வதீ பரமேஶ்வரௌ

 

To derive the pertinent idiom and its ideation I prostrate to the Parents of the Universe, the duo of pArvati - parameshvara, who are symbiotically cleaved together like word  and sense.

 (This shloka is the first shloka in Kalidasa's Raghuvamsha )

13.रामाय रामभद्राय रामचन्द्राय वेधसे।

रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः॥ 

rAmAya rAmabhadrAya rAmachandrAya vedhase /

raghunAthAya nAthAya sItAyAH pataye namaH //

ராமாய ராமபத்ராய ராமசந்த்ராய வேதஸே

ரகுநாதாய நாதாய ஸீதாயா: பதயே நம:

 

Prostrations to Sri Rama, the Beloved of Sita, and who is the Gem of the Raghu dynasty, who is the repository of all Knowledge, and also  known as Ramachandra, or Ramabhadra.

[Incidentally, Rama is the name  by which He was always called or thought of by Dasaratha,the father. Kausalya the mother used to call him Ramabhadra; Kaikeyi, by the name Ramachandra;  vedhas is the name by which the Guru Vasishta called him; Raghunatha  by the other Rishis; nAtha by Sita; and SitA-pati by the people of Ayodhya.]

14. वसुदेवसुतं देवं कंसचाणूर-मर्दनम्।

देवकी-परमानन्दं कृष्णं वन्दे जगद्गुर्ं॥

vasudeva-sutaM devaM kamsa-cANUra-mardanam /

devakI-paramAnandaM kRRisHHnaM vande jagadgurum //

வஸுதேவ ஸுதம் தேவம் கம்ஸசாணூரமர்தனம்

தேவகீபரமானந்தம் கிருஷ்ணம் வந்தே ஜகத்குரும்

 

I bow to the Lord Krishna who is the Guru for the Universe - the One who is the son of Vasudeva, the One who gives the greatest pleasure to Devaki, and the One who was the vanquisher of Kamsa and cANUra.

15. भानो भास्कर-मार्ताण्ड चण्डरश्मै दिवाकर।

आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यं ज्ञानं देहि नमोस्तु ते॥

bhAno bhAskara-mArthANDa caNDarashmai divAkara /

Ayur-Arogyam-aishvaryaM GYAnaM dehi namostu te //

பானோ பாஸ்கர மார்த்தாண்ட சண்டரஶ்மை திவாகர

ஆயுராரோக்ய மைஶ்வர்யம் ஞானம் தேஹி நமோஸ்து தே

 

Oh Sun-God, the One who makes everything shine, the Powerful One, the One with warm and hot rays, the One who makes the day and night, prostrations to You! Please bless me with long life, Good Health, Prosperity and Spiritual Wisdom. 

 

16. विश्वेशं माधवं धुण्डिं दण्डपाणिं च भैरवम्।

वन्दे काशीं गुहां गङ्गां भवानीं मणिकर्णिकाम्॥

vishveshaM mAdhavaM dhuNDiM daNDapAniM ca bhairavam /

vande kAshIM guhAM gangAM bhavAnIM maNikarNikAm  //

விஶ்வேஶம் மாதவம் துண்டிம் தண்டபாணிம் ச பைரவம்

வந்தே காஶீம் குஹாம் கங்காம் பவானீம் மணிகர்ணிகாம்

 

Prostrations to the deities of the sacred shrines of Kashi, Vishveshvara, Madhava, DhuNDi, and Bhairava and also to the sacred Ganga, Goddess Bhavani, MaNikarNika and the caves.

17. श्रीवैकुण्ठ-विरक्ताय स्वामि पुष्करिणी तठे।

रमया रममाणाय श्रीनिवासाय मङ्गलम्॥

shrI-vaikuNTha-viraktAya svAmi pushhkariNI-taTe /

ramayA ramamANAya shrinivAsAya mangaLam //

ஶ்ரீவைகுண்டவிரக்தாய ஸ்வாமி புஷ்கரிணீ தடே

ரமயா ரமமாணாய ஶ்ரீநிவாஸாய மங்களம்

 

Mangalam to the Lord of Venkata (mountain), who plays pleasantly with Goddess Lakshmi, on the shores of the Lake called Swami Pushkarini, (probably) having been tired of Vaikuntha.

18.लोकवीरं महापूज्यं सर्व-रक्षाकरं विभुम्।
शाम्भवी हृदयानन्दं शास्तारं प्रणमाम्यहं॥​

lokavIraM mahApUjyaM sarva-rakshhAkaraM vibhum .

shAmbhavI hRRidayAnandaM shAstAraM praNamAmyahaM ..

லோகவீரம் மஹாபூஜ்யம் ஸர்வரக்ஷாகரம் விபும்

​ஶாம்பவீ ஹ்ருதயானந்தம் ஶாஸ்தாரம் ப்ரணமாம்யஹம்

I make my namaskar to Shasta – the universal warrior, most respected,  the saviour of all, the magnificent one, -- the one who gladdens the heart of Mother Parvati

 

19. शरीरे झर्झरीभूते व्याधिग्रस्ते कलेबरे।

औषधं जाह्नवी तोयं वैध्यो नारायणो हरिः॥१५॥

sharIre jharjharI bhUte vyAdhigraste kalebare /

aushhadhaM jAhnavI toyaM vaiDhyo nArAyaNo hariH  //

ஶரீரே ஜர்ஜரீபூதே வியாதிக்ரஸ்தே களேபரே

ஔஷதம் ஜாஹ்னவீ தோயம் வைத்யோ நாராயணோ ஹரி:

 

When the body is overpowered by the mess of disease, the medicine is (to be taken as)  Ganga Water and the Doctor is  (to be taken as) Sriman Narayana.

20. राम-लक्ष्मण-सूर्येन्दु-जटायु-श्रुति पूजित।
मदनान्तक सर्वेश वैद्यनाथ नमोऽस्तु ते॥

rAma-lakshhmaNa-sUryendu-jaTAyu-shruti pUjita .

madanAntaka sarvesha vaidyanAtha namo.astu te ..

ராமலக்ஷ்மண ஸூர்யேந்து ஜடாயு ஶ்ருதி பூஜி​த /

மதனாந்தக ஸர்வேஶ வைத்யநாத நமோஸ்துதே //

Hey Vaidyanatha Swamin, I  make my namaskar to you – You who are the Lord of all, the One who was the end of Manmatha, and who has been worshipped by  Sri Rama, Lakshmana, the Sun-God, The Moon, the vulture Jatayu, and also by the Vedas.

21. उग्रं वीरं महा-विष्णुं ज्वलन्तं सर्वतो-मुखम्।
नृसिम्ह-भीषणं भद्रं मृत्योर्मृत्युं नमाम्यहम्॥

ugraM vIraM mahA-vishhNuM jvalantaM sarvato-mukham .
nRRisimha-bhIshhaNaM bhadraM mRRityormRRityuM namAmyaham

உக்ரம் வீரம் மஹாவிஷ்ணும் ஜ்வலந்தம் ஸர்வதோ முகம் /

ந்ருஸிம்ஹபீஷணம் பத்ரம் ம்ருத்யோர்ம்ருத்யும்நமாம்யஹம்​//

I bow down to Lord Narasimha who is highly ferocious and brave and the emanation of Lord Maha Vishnu. He is full of effulgence, terrific and auspicious and the death of death.

Note: This shloka is actually a mantra to propitiate Lord Narasimha.

22.पूज्याय राघवेन्द्राय सत्य-धर्म-रताय च।
भजतां कल्पवृक्षाय नमतां कामधेनवे॥

pUjyAya rAghavendrAya satya-dharma-ratAya ca .
bhajatAM kalpavRRikshhAya namatAM kAmadhenave .

பூஜ்யாய ராகவேந்த்ராய ஸத்யதர்ம ரதாய ச/

பஜதாம் கல்பவ்ருக்ஷாய நமதாம் காமதேனவே//

Let us worship and pay our obeisance to the wish-yielding tree as well as the celestial Kamadhenu, that is the respected Raghavendra, who is transfixed in Truth and Dharma (the two pillars of Hindu religion).

The  following three longer shlokas (not only for children, but also for all of us) are a form of very intense prayer, whenever one faces any of the following situations:

  1. We are confused about what to do, what is right and what is wrong;

  2. We do not understand some teaching, either in class or elsewhere;

  3. We are overwhelmed with anger or hate and we want to get out of that state; and

  4. We are overcome by intense grief due to causes, self-made,  man-made or otherwise!  OR

  5. We are dazed with a divine marvel!

 

 23. कार्पण्य-दोषोऽपहत-स्वभावः पृच्छामि त्वां धर्म-सम्मूढ-चेताः।

यच्छ्रेयः-स्यान्-निश्चितं ब्रूहि तन्-मे शिष्यस्तेऽहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम्॥

kArpaNya-doshho.apahata-svabhAvaH

pRRicchhAmi tvAM dharma-sammUDha-cetAH .

yacchhreyaH-syAn-nishcitaM brUhi tan-me

shishhyaste.ahaM shAdhi mAM tvAM prapannam .. (B.G. II – 7)

கார்பண்யதோஷோபஹத ஸ்வபாவஹ

ப்ருச்சாமி த்வாம் தர்ம-ஸம்மூட-சேதாஹ் \

யச்ச்ரேயஸ்யாந்-நிஶ்சிதம் ப்ரூஹி தன் மே

​ஶிஷ்யஸ்தேஹம் ஶாதிமாம் த்வாம் ப்ரபன்னம் \\

It is the poor spirit in me which has deprived me of my true nature; my mind is totally confused about what is right and what is wrong. Please tell me decisively what is good for me. I am your disciple; please accept my surrender and bless me!

 24.  त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्।

त्वमव्ययः शाश्वत-धर्म-गोप्ता सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे॥

tvamakshharaM paramaM veditavyaM

tvamasya vishvasya paraM nidhAnam 

tvamavyayaH shAshvata-dharma-goptA

sanAtanastvaM purushho mato me .. B.G. XI – 18)

த்வமக்ஷரம் பரமம் வேதிதவ்யம்

த்வமஸ்ய விஶ்வஸ்ய பரம் நிதானம் /

த்வமவ்யயஶ்-ஶாஶ்வத-தர்ம-கோப்தா

ஸநாதனஸ்த்வம் புருஷோ மதோ மே //

You are Imperishable; You are the Supreme to be known; You are the ultimate support for all this universe. You are the  protector of the eternal Dharma. I deem You to be the unborn everlasting Being.

SPECIAL NOTE TO CHILDREN: The statement 'You are the ultimate support for the entire universe’  (tvamasya vishvasya paraM nidhAnaM) has to be explained a little.  God is the support for the universe.  What does this mean? It does not mean that God is lifting the Universe on His head or shoulders. I shall give you two examples to tell you what ‘support’ means here.

All of us have seen the ocean and its waves.  Now what is the ‘support’ for the waves?  The physical support is of course the ocean.  But there is something more that is meant here. Without the ocean, waves cannot exist. Waves exist because of the ocean.  It is in this sense that God is the support for us and the universe.  Without God, we or the universe cannot exist.  This is what is meant by ‘You are the ultimate support for the entire universe’.

Second example. We have all seen movies.  Movies are seen on the screen.  Without a screen, there cannot be any movies. The screen may be a real cloth screen or maybe a computer screen or a cell phone screen.  But a screen has to be there for the movies to exist and be seen.  God is the screen. We and the universe are all movies on that God-screen.  Without the God-screen none of us or the universe can exist.  So just as the screen is the ultimate support for the movies, God is the ultimate support for the entire universe.

25..  त्वमादिदेवः पुरुषः पुराणः त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्।

वेत्तासि वेद्यं च परं च धाम त्वया ततं विश्वमनन्तरूपम्॥

 

tvamAdidevaH purushhaH purANaH tvamasya vishvasya paraM nidhAnam .

vettAsi vedyaM ca paraM ca dhAma tvayA tataM vishvamanantarUpam .. (B.G. XI – 38)

த்வமாதிதேவ ஃ புருஷ ஃ புராணஹ

த்வமஸ்ய விஶ்வஸ்ய பரம் நிதானம் \

வேத்தாஸி வேத்யம் ச பரம் ச தாம 

த்வயா ததம் விஶ்வமனந்தரூப \\

You are the most  ancient Lord, the primal Spirit, the supreme abode of the universe. You are the Knower and also the Object to be known, You are the Ultimate Transcendental One; Oh Being of Infinite forms, You pervade the entire universe.

ADDITIONAL NOTE TO CHILDREN:Here the mention about infinite forms  needs some explanation. ‘anantarUpa’ means Infinite number of forms.  This is one of the most fundamental truths of Hinduism.    God is only one.  There is no second opinion throughout the Hindu religion.  But that One Absolute God, appears and manifests in multifarious forms.  He is Vishnu, He is Shiva, He is Vinayaka, He is Subrahmanya, He is the  same one who appears also in female forms like Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati, etc.  Some people  do not understand this truth of Hinduism. They ask ‘Why do you have so many Gods?’, How can there be so many Gods? And so on.  A good answer was once given by Kanchi Maha Periava. Suppose you had in your photo album, photos of your father, one in his office dress, one in his swimming suit, one in his pyjamas, one in his veshti worn in a traditional orthodox way, one in his shorts, which he wears when  he is gardening,  and one in a female dress in which he was acting in a drama… and so on in several dresses.  Your friend  visits you and sees this album. You tell him: All these are my father’s photos.  Suppose he asks you: ‘Do you have so many fathers?’.  Is it not a totally  absurd question? So also is the question ‘Do you have so many gods?’. There is only one God Absolute.  For various purposes He appears in various forms.  Not only the well-known forms of Vishnu and Shiva.  He appears sometimes as a man-lion, sometimes as an ordinary man, sometimes as a boar or a pig or a fish, each time there is a purpose. That is why Arjuna says in this shloka ‘tvayA tatam vishvam anantarupa’.  Hey, God with infinite forms, You have pervaded this entire world. In fact it has more meanings.  Whatever you see in the world, -- a tree, a mountain, an animal, anything, it is all God’s manifestation only.  This is the greatness of Hindu religion. God is in everything, more, Everything is God.  Even more, there is nothing else but God!

Another important fact from this shloka is: knower and the known are both God. In fact, everything is God. Subject and object are both God. The seer (one who sees) and the seen are both God. The One God manifests as everything.

26. बुद्धिर्बलं यशो धैर्यं निर्भयत्वमरोगता।

अजाड्यं वाक्-पटुत्वं च हनूमत्स्मरणाद्भवेत्॥

buddhirbalaM yasho dhairyaM nirbhayatvam-arogatA /

ajADyaM vAk-paTutvaM ca hanUmat-smaraNAt bhavet //

புத்திர்பலம்  யஶோ தைர்யம் நிர்பயத்வமரோகதா/

அஜாட்யம் வாக்படுத்வம் ச ஹனூமத் ஸ்மரணாத் பவேத்//

Those who remember and think of Anjaneya are blessed with Intelligence, Strength, Fame, Courage, Fearlessness, Good Health, Alertness and Talent for Speech. 

27. मयि मेधां मयि प्रजां मय्यग्निस्तेजो दधातु
मयि मेधां मयि प्रजां मयीन्द्र इन्द्रियं दधातु
मयि मेधां मयि प्रजां मयि सूर्यो भ्राजो दधातु॥

Mayi medhAM mayi prajAM mayyagnistejo daDhAtu

Mayi medhAM mayi prajAM mayyIndriya indriyaM  daDhAtu

Mayi medhAM mayi prajAM mayi sUryo bhrAjo  daDhAtu //

மயி மேதாம் மயி ப்ரஜாம் மய்யக்நிஸ்தேஜோ ததாது

மயி மேதாம் மயி ப்ரஜாம் மய்யீந்த்ர இந்த்ரியம் ததாது

மயி மேதாம் மயி ப்ரஜாம்  மயிஸூர்யோ ப்ராஜோ ததாது //

May agni, the Fire-God, bestow on me his brilliance with Intelligence and descendents; May Indra, the King of the divines, bestow on me well-kept senses, intelligence and descendents; and may the Sun-God, bestow on me His enlightenment, intelligence and descendents.
